What is the Image Compress tool?

Written and maintained by the BitConvert team · Feb 27, 2026

Image Compress shrinks the file size of your photos and graphics while keeping them looking good. It re-encodes JPEG, PNG, and WebP images through the browser's Canvas API, and a quality slider lets you decide how aggressively to trade visual detail for a smaller file.

Because JPEG and WebP use lossy compression, dropping the quality a little often removes large amounts of data the eye barely notices, frequently cutting file size by well over half. PNG stays lossless, so it is best reserved for graphics that need crisp edges or transparency. You can also switch the output format during compression to pick whichever codec gives the best result. All work happens locally on your device, so your images are never uploaded anywhere.

Common Use Cases

Slim down hero images and photos so a website loads faster and scores better on Core Web Vitals. Fit a large photo under the size limit for an email attachment or upload form. Compress product shots for an online store so catalog pages feel snappy on mobile. Reduce screenshot sizes before adding them to documentation or a bug report. Prepare lighter images for a slide deck to keep the file manageable.
